Three of my favourite things - science, coffee and cycling!

One consequence of running one's own small business is a) keeping costs down b) not being distracted working at home c) staying alert and focused.

How does one do this? Simple - cycle everywhere and drink coffee. And when the library gets too oppressive, cycle to a coffee shop with free wi-fi. Particularly one as creative and inspiring as "My Coffee Stop" on Enfield Chase station. Stopping benefits of parents whose children don't attend school

The clumsy title of this blog is actually deliberate, as I wish to compare two cases of children not attending school.

Many of you will have seen the headlines a few weeks back about ideas to stop benefits of parents whose children consistently truant.  This is not a political blog, and I'm not going to debate the proposal - which is nothing more than an idea at this point anyway.  However, it made me think about this in contrast to children who never go to school - home schooled children.

I've started twittering in earnest for my business; a mix of science, education, and North London networking tweets and retweets.

Anyway, I came across  science140.org.  Their project involves contributors tweeting scientific explanations  - therefore keeping them to 140 characters!

I've contributed a few - its good fun, but actually also really good discipline! Trying to condense an idea into so few characters really makes you think hard about the essence of what you are trying to explain.  I ...

Hello, and welcome.

I am writing this blog partly to introduce myself, and partly to explain the reason behind this blog.

After a science degree, a career in science and technology marketing followed by communications, I decided to change career and undertook teacher training. I am now tremendously excited to be starting my business as a tutor.  I really enjoy the interaction, feedback and the relationships built with single or small groups of pupils as compared to the larger classroom setting....
